Caprera Sailing Centre

Caprera Sailing Centre is one of the oldest Italian sailing schools and one of the most prestigious in the world. It is a non-profit association and a member of the International Sailing School Association. Some famous and successful skippers started their carrier at Caprera. Let’s mention at least a couple of them: Cino Ricci, skipper of the racing yacht Azzurra, winner of America’s Cup or Roberto Ferrarese, multi world-champion who participated in 1980 to the Olympic games.

Coin Bridge and Garibaldi Museum

The Coin Bridge, named after a nearby strip of land, is the only one connecting the two largest islands of the archipelago – La Maddalena and Caprera. The Coin bridge is used by those who go Caprera to hike or walk or to visit the Sea Museum, Caprera Sailing Center or the Museum of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

G8 summit

Exploring the city of La Maddalena, to the east of the island, you will notice a huge glass cube. What is it? This is what remains of the G8 Summit planned for 2009 in the area of the former Arsenale that unfortunately never hosted the big names of the international politic scene. For the moment the Main Conference Centre, this is the name of the huge glass cube, and the jetties have hosted only a world famous sport event – Luis Vuitton Trophy in 2010, since then the entire complex has been abandoned.

Piazza Umberto I square

The locals nicknamed it Command Square but the real name is Pizza Umberto I. Its vast extension allows the organization of all the kinds of the festivals and ceremonies, such as the important Swearing of the Oath Ceremony for the Navel cadets.

Saint Mary Magdalene Church in La Maddalena

The Parish church is dedicated to Saint Mary Magdalene. The Holy Mass in honour of the patron saint of the town is celebrated on 22nd July. The church was designed by a Piedmontese military engineer Giacinto Marciot and built by the islanders and soldiers between 1814 and 1819 in exactly the same spot where a simple small church had previously stood.

LA MADDALENA WATERFRONT

The houses on the waterfront in the historic centre of La Maddalena have pure and precise lines, they are bright, and are mainly two stories high, they are plastered and painted with pastel colours. The most important spots in the historic centre are Garibaldi’s Column, Zìcavo house, Garibaldi Square and the town hall, the parish church devoted to Saint Mary Magdalene with a small diocesan museum and Umberto I Square.

Madonneta Chapel and Cala Francese Bay

Up on the granite cliff overlooking seashore to the west of the town of La Maddalena we can see a small Cappella della Madonnetta,  Madonneta Chapel in English. It is one of the most charming places in the whole area.

SAINT MARY PORT

Porto della Madonna, or Saint Mary Port in English, is called also Manto della Madonna, that means Saint Mary’s Mantle in English, or even natural pool, the lagoon and in the past also the salt lake. This stretch of sea enclosed between the islands of Budelli, Razzoli and Santa Maria is considered one of the most beautiful marine areas in the world.

Cala dell’Amore Beach

Cala Soraya beach

Just few metres northwards from Cala Corsara there is the snow-white Cala Soraya which is visible even at quite a distance. The extraordinarily fine white sand extends in a semicircle over the almost rock free slope, enclosed by low cliffs that meet the crystal clear water and shallow seabed.

Cala Granara

Cala Granara is one of the most beautiful and fascinating beaches of the Archipelago of La Maddalena. It is located on the southern coast of the Island of Spargi and is enclosed by a shallow reef and the greenery of the Mediterranean scrub.

Corsair Bay

One of the pearls of La Maddalena Archipelago is undoubtedly Cala Corsara (or Corsair Bay in English), a small paradise bay located on the southern coast of the island of Spargi. The bay was named after the dangerous corsairs that used to terrorize the local population and chose this location as a secure shelter.

Spargi Island

Spargi island is the third largest one of the archipelago, it has almost a rounded shape, about 4 square kilometres of surface area and 11 kilometres of coastline with several spectacular beaches situated along the south-eastern shores like Cala Corsara, Cala dell’Amore, Cala Granara and Cala Soraya.

Porto Rafael

Porto Rafael is a small luxury tourist center that faces out over the islands of La Maddalena archipelago. Note the predominating colours, the azure of the sea, the green of the vegetation and the white of the villas nestled among the granite rocks of the hill called Punta Sardegna.

Palau

The small town of Palau is set between Capo d’Orso and Punta Sardegna. A small village at the beginning of the 18th century, it became a small town with more than 4000 inhabitants and schools, offices and various commercial activities, many of them in some way related to tourism. Palau became an autonomous municipality in 1959.

LA MADDALENA ARCHIPELAGO

Follow us to discover the wonderful archipelago of La Maddalena, the first national park in Sardinia, created in 1994. The archipelago includes seven larger island: La Maddalena, Santo Stefano, Caprera, Spargi, Razzoli , Budelli and Santa Maria. What makes it different form other archipelagos that we find all around the Italian coast is that all the islands in the La Maddalena Archipelago are very close to each other.

Cannigione

Cannigione is a beautiful tourist village. It is a fraction of the municipality of Arzachena, it has about 800 inhabitants and extends along the western coast of the Arzachena Gulf. Conca, Tanca Manna, Barca Bruciata which are located along the coast and many others.

BAJA SARDINIA

Baja Sardinia, one of our departure points, is a small village with about 150 inhabitants belonging to the municipality of Arzachena. Baja Sardinia is just a stone’s throw far from the Emerald Coast. That’s why there are a couple of clubs and discos, for example Il Ritual, a disco club in the artificial caves of the granite rocks, or a popular open air club Phi Beach. On the outskirts of Baja Sardinia there is the only water theme park on the Emerald Coast Acquadream.

Red Cape Site on Caprera island

On the left on the most southern tip of Caprera island we will see L’Opera di Punta Rossa, or Red Cape Site. It is a complex of old military constructions built between 1879 and the beginning of the first world war on a narrow one kilometre and a half long strip of land. The complex is protected by the sea on one side and by high granite rocks on the other one.

Former U.S.A. Military Base

On Santo Stefano there are several military areas and some others that are subject to military servitudes. We have already mentioned Saint George Fortress or anti-aircraft battery Punta Zucchero, Sugar Peak in English, with the rests of the original station built between two world wars. There exist fuel storage location Punta Sassu as well as the Italian military navy bases.

LA MADDALENA: GARIBALDI SQUARE AND TOWN HALL

The most important square of the town is named after Garibaldi. In the past it was called “Red square” due to the original colour of the paving. Right in the centre of the square we find the unmissable bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi made by Carlo Pozzi in 2011 for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. In front of the statue there is civic marketplace and the Town Hall. Both have been built on the site of what was once Elm square.

Villa Webber

Villa Weber is located on the Island of La Maddalena, in a park surrounded by greenery and stands out with its square tower. Sophisticated and elegant villa was built between 1855 and 1857 and named after its first owner British citizen James Phillip Weber. From the 7th to the 27th August 1943 it was Benito Mussolini’s prison before being transferred to Gran Sasso.

La Maddalena island

La Maddalena is the largest island of the archipelago. As you will see already even from a distance, the granite coastline is very jagged. The island has an almost triangular shape, a surface area of 20 square kilometres and about 45 km of coastline. Even here we can find numerous wonderful beaches and bays, for example, Abbatoggia peninsula, Baia Trinita, cala Lung and Cala Spalmatore.

Santa Maria Island

Santa Maria island is the third and the last island that delimits Saint Mary Port. Santa Maria with a surface area of 2 square kilometres has about 10 km of coastline. Santa Maria was one of the first islands of the archipelago to be inhabited.Santa Maria island has bewitched also some famous people like Franco Solinas, Gian Maria Volonté and Roberto Benigni.

Spiaggia Rosa Beach

Spiaggia Rosa, the Pink beach in English, is the most marvellous, the most particular and the most protected beach of the La Maddalena Archipelago. Since 1992 there has been a ban on access to the beach as well as transiting and swimming in the bay within the limits marked by the buoys, which are about 70 metres far from the shore. The pink colour is mostly visible on the shoreline.

Capo D’Orso promontory

Right on the summit of the hill, near the town of Palau, we can see a granite mass shaped by the elements to resemble a huge bear. This is La Roccia dell’Orso (Bear Rock in English), located 120 meters above sea level and dominating the entire granite promontory.  Bear Rock is one of the most panoramic points of the northern Sardinian coast.

Santo Stefano Island

The Santo Stefano island is situated in the straits of the sea dividing Palau and La Maddalena. It is the fourth largest island of the Archipelago with a surface area of 4 square kilometres.
On its southern coast,there are the most interesting places from historic and touristic point of view: an old granite quarry, the Villamarina Tower, the San Giorgio fortress and the only accommodation facility on the island – a 4 star hotel Santo Stefano Resort.

PHI BEACH

Phi Beach is a wonderful open air club, near Baja Sardinia, that can be reached both by land and sea. The club can host up to 5000 guests. It is a favourite of the many VIP guests that spend their summer holidays on the Emerlad Coast. The best italian and international DJs perform at Phi Beach during the summer season. The club organizes beach parties, gourmet festivals and various exclusive events. The best time to visit Phi Beach is at sunset when the sun sinks down behind the granite rocks and its last rays are reflected on the water.
